Release notes
What's new in 2.0
The update where PhotoMaker stopped being a filter app and became an editor. Two new tools, a second shelf of AI styles, and a region switch on every effect — with the same rule as always: it all happens on your phone.
01The short version
- Remove — tap what you don't want in the shot and it is gone, gap filled.
- AI Styles+ — 86 more art styles, each downloaded only when you tap it.
- Subject or background — every effect can now target one side of the mask, and keeps its own settings for each.
- Save your own look — keep a finished edit as a template and replay it on the next photo.
- A new home screen, light and dark themes, 18 accent colours, and 11 languages.
Everything below runs on the device in your hand. There is still no account, no upload and no watermark.
02Remove and replace
- Remove is a new tool with four ways in: let the app find the objects in the frame, tap one to select it, paint over anything by hand, or brush a mistake back. The hole it leaves is filled in from the surrounding picture.
- Background cuts your subject out and fills behind it with nothing, a colour, one of your own photos or a searched image — and the new remove-only mode leaves a transparent PNG.
- Subject cut-outs now work before the optional add-on finishes downloading, and on phones with less memory to spare, so masking is available the first time you open the app.
03AI styles
- AI Styles+ adds 86 styles across 10 new families — patterns, ink and pen, glow, paint, colour grades. The whole shelf browses offline; only the style you tap is fetched, and each one is checked before it is installed.
- Manage downloads, in Settings, lists what you have installed and gives the space back in one tap.
- The original 182 styles now apply to the subject or the background alone, and run behind a progress card you can cancel — tapping a different style while one is working simply swaps it.
- Portrait finds the faces in a frame on its own for spotlight, skin smoothing and eye clarity.
04Precision editing
- Every effect gets a Full · Subject · Background switch, and each region keeps its own set of values — so the subject can be warm while the background goes cold, in one pass.
- Draw your own mask where the automatic cut-out is not what you meant: paint it, erase it, single-tap to move it.
- Curves, Selective, Color Mix and Split Tone give per-channel and per-point control, with preset shelves to start from.
- Reshape is a full liquify now — push, swell, pinch, twirl and a restore brush, undone a stroke at a time.
05Creative tools
- Draw brings 24 brushes for painting straight onto the photo, plus a blend mode that smudges the real pixels.
- Double Exposure blends a second photo in with seven modes and live transform; the picked photo can be edited before it lands.
- Text curves along a path, tucks behind your subject, and pulls from a searchable font library.
- Templates saves a finished session as a look — every tool, value, masked region and placed object, replayed in order on a new photo. 94 are built in to start from, including a new eighties pack — faded portraits, pastel summers, neon and video-club grades.
- Halation, Glow, Bloom, Grainy Film, Overlays, Frames and Vignette all stack on top of each other, each as its own undo step.
06Make it yours
- A rebuilt home screen: a rotating hero, the edit you left unfinished, daily challenges, one-tap looks, and a rail of AI style before-and-afters — tap one and the editor opens on that style.
- Light and dark everywhere, editor included — it follows your system theme instead of staying dark.
- 18 accent palettes, a Material You option, alternate app fonts and a pure-black mode for AMOLED screens, in Settings → Appearance.
- Tool guides — tap ? inside any tool for a walkthrough that points at the real buttons.
07Faster to get into
- PhotoMaker now appears in Android's share sheet and under Edit with, so a photo can come straight from your gallery or another app.
- A tool catalog with categories, and a row of the five tools you actually use, replace the old fixed tab bar.
- A camera button on the home screen shoots straight into the editor.
- 11 languages — English, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic and Hindi, laid out right-to-left where that is how you read.
